The only thing scarier on Halloween weekend for the Gehlke Bros is yet another week with an even number of splits. That is because it is frightfully easy for a minor misstep to become a major misfortune in the standings in the event of anything other than a draw. We had two games on the line in Week 8, and they nearly became Glenn’s undoing on Sunday morning.

If there is a cardinal sin of football picks, it is changing one’s mind at the last minute. Occasionally it saves you from a bad call, but more often it seems to lead to underperformance and losing games you might otherwise have won. Going against his intuition, the Senior Bro abandoned the Vikings in favor of the Packers, thinking Green Bay was due for a win at home against its division-leading foes, who were coming off a short week after an emotional Monday night upset of the 49ers. Primed for a letdown? Only if you picked the Packers, who floundered out of the gate on the way to a 24-10 defeat.

Things were looking good for the Junior Bro, whose Texans were on the verge of sending the winless Panthers to their seventh consecutive defeat. But that was before Carolina rallied for a game-winning field goal at the last second, 15-13. The result was that the Bros split their two splits and Sean remains three games up in the Surfy standings.

We had a rare 16-game schedule in Week 8, and Ben’s 12-4 performance led the way to first place, helping King Chaos snip a game off Sean’s overall lead and drawing himself into a second-place tie with his dad, just three games back. Sean and Glenn each finished with 11-5 records for second place. We all correctly picked Buffalo, Dallas, Miami, New York Jets, Jacksonville, Seattle, Philadelphia, Baltimore, L.A. Chargers and Detroit for wins. No one expected New Orleans, Tennessee, Denver or Cincinnati to win.
