Ending what had become one of the longest droughts to start a season, the Senior Bro in Week 6 rediscovered a bit of what has been missing from his prognosticating arsenal lately: a winning week. After slumping to a 6-game deficit last week through a combination of bad bets and bad luck, Glenn made enough right moves in a bye-shortened week to shake the monkey off his back and finally gain ground in the GBF standings. He still trails Sean by 4.

Once again we had an even number of splits at stake: 4. And with a pre-dawn game in London and Sean on the road for an early birthday celebration, it meant mailing in our picks Saturday night. Glenn got off to a good start Sunday morning when Washington defeated Atlanta, 24-16, and Cincinnati held off Seattle, 17-13. But after the Patriots fell to the Raiders, 21-17, on Sunday afternoon, it came down to the Monday night contest between the Cowboys and Chargers to decide whether there would be movement in the standings or more status quo.

It was a tight game largely decided by big defensive plays, and none of them was bigger than Dallas’ game-winning interception as the Chargers were driving up the field with less than 2 minutes to play, when Justin Herbert’s pass intended for Quentin Johnston fell into the arms of a diving Dallas Cornerback Stephon Gilmore to preserve the 20-17 Cowboys victory. No, it wasn’t the Stupor Bore, but you’d be forgiven for thinking Dallas had just won it by Glenn’s reaction.

Long forgotten is the last decade when the Senior Bro strung together five winning seasons in six years in blowout fashion. His record in the 2020s has more resembled an old car with a tired engine that needs to be warmed up before hitting the road; his first winning week of the 2020 season came in Week 4, and it took until Week 5 in both 2021 and 2022 — all of them ultimately ending in defeat. If he is to avoid dropping a record fifth-straight Surfy Trophy to Sean, Glenn has plenty of work ahead of him.

But for one week, Glenn can celebrate a first-place finish with his 11-4 record. He gets to share it with Ben, who posted an identical slate of picks. Sean finished third with a 9-6 mark. We all correctly picked Kansas City, Baltimore, Minnesota, Jacksonville, Miami, Detroit, L.A. Rams and Buffalo. No one picked Houston, Cleveland, or the N.Y. Jets to win — the latter two in so doing also upsetting the last two previously undefeated teams, San Francisco and Philadelphia.
