There’s a reason that we pay attention each week to whether there is an even or odd number of splits. With an odd number, barring a tie, you are guaranteed that there will be some movement in the Surfy standings. With an even number, however, the only guarantees you have are either status quo or major chaos. Through four weeks of the 2023 GBF season, we have seen four consecutive even-split weeks… and a lot of chaos.

Still searching for a winning week to gain ground on the Junior Bro, things got off to a promising start for Glenn on Thursday night when the Lions put together a convincing performance at division rival Green Bay, establishing a 24-point lead en route to a 34-20 victory. But that was just the first of what would be four splits for the week, which meant the Senior Bro would need to win three of them to move the needle. It didn’t happen that way.

All three of Sunday’s splits occurred during the morning games, where at one stage Glenn found himself on the short side in 8 of 9 active contests. The only one he led was the marquee matchup between Miami and Buffalo, in which the Bills finally took control for a 48-20 win. The other two splits were mostly over before they started, with Baltimore’s easy 28-3 defeat of Cleveland, which had to start rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson at QB in place of injured starter Deshaun Watson — a mismatch against the Lamar Jackson-led Ravens.

In the remaining game, the Rams went up 23-0 on host Indianapolis before the Colts finally found some life in the third quarter and mounted an improbable comeback to send the game into overtime. But L.A. won the coin toss, elected to receive the ball, and took advantage of that initial possession to engineer a game-winning touchdown drive for a 29-23 final.

So the Bros each went 2-2 on splits and Sean survived the late scare to retain his 4-game season advantage. Glenn and Sean tied for the week’s best record at 11-5. Meanwhile, Ben, who confessed that this week seemed difficult to pick, backed that up by going 8-8 to finish third and fall three games further off the pace in the overall standings. The season may still be young, but it gets old in a hurry when losses start piling up. Just ask the Panthers and Bears, who each find themselves with 0-4 records following Sunday’s latest losses.

A difficult week, yes, but we still all managed to pick winners Minnesota, Philadelphia, L.A. Chargers, Dallas, San Francisco, Kansas City and Seattle. No one correctly predicted winners Houston, Tampa Bay or Tennessee.
