The Senior Bro may have been vacationing in the Hawaiian islands for several days, but it was far from paradise for his lead in the Surfy standings, which took a tsunami-size hit after Sean notched his first winning week of the season. With another split on the line Thursday to open Week 8, what had been a solid advantage suddenly seemed quite vulnerable.

Thursday night’s action featured the Vikings at the Chargers, two puzzling teams that have successfully achieved mediocrity through being hobbled by upsets and injuries. Who would show up was anybody’s guess, and guess we all did with Sean taking Minnesota while Glenn played the hometown blue and gold. What appeared on paper to be a tight contest was anything but, and the Chargers rolled to a 37-10 victory that gave Glenn a leg up in the standings entering the thick of the schedule on Sunday.

For the first time this season we saw an odd number of splits. Sean stuck with the road teams and Glenn cheered on the homies in Chicago/Baltimore and Green Bay/Pittsburgh in Sunday night’s finale. The Ravens have likely seen their Stupor Bore dreams evaporate after a 1-5 start, but on Sunday morning they returned to winning form on the arm of Tyler Huntley, subbing for the injured Lamar Jackson. They took advantage of an inconsistent Bears offense for a 30-16 victory that assured Glenn a 3-game advantage in the standings. But would it be more?

It came down to the Sunday nighter highlighted by the Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers facing his former team when the Packers came to call. What a cool story it would have been for one of the NawFuL’s most successful QBs to get the win and become only the fifth quarterback to defeat all 32 teams in the league, joining the elite club of Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Peyton Manning. Cool story, maybe… but not to be. Pittsburgh took a 16-7 lead to the locker room, only to see it pulverized by a dominant second-half performance from Jordan Love and the Packers D, as Green Bay rolled to a 35-25 win.

Sean can be grateful that the legendary Sunday Night Curse for Glenn still survives, as his deficit is just three games instead of a possible five. Glenn and Ben tied for the week’s best mark at 9-4, and Sean was close on their heels for third place at 8-5. We all feasted on picks of New England, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Denver, Indianapolis and Kansas City. Nobody predicted wins by Miami or the N.Y. Jets — who got their first victory with a big comeback at Cincinnati, leaving no teams winless through eight weeks.
