Logic took a pass under the light of a full moon as we navigated Week 5 of the season and the first of the treacherous “bye” weeks. The results were anything but kind to favored teams, and there were some notable upsets as the last of the unbeatens fell. But through the carnage, the battling Bros emerged pretty much where they entered the week — still 4 games apart.

Glenn and Sean had a pair of splits in Sunday morning’s action: Giants at Saints and Dolphins at Panthers. If you checked the scores early in the first half, it looked like the Dolphins were cruising to victory and the Saints were headed for their ninth consecutive defeat. Neither one of those outcomes happened. New Orleans shook off a slow start and 11-point deficit, capitalizing on a turnover-prone New York offense en route to a 26-14 win — the first for quarterback Spencer Rattler and his previously winless team. Fortunately for Sean, Miami somehow managed to blow a 17-0 lead in a 27-24 loss to Carolina, allowing the Junior Bro to salvage the split to stay within 4 games of the lead for the Surfy Trophy.

If Glenn might have been feeling deflated by the one that got away, he had plenty of company among some of the league’s leading teams this weekend. Formerly undefeated Philadelphia and Buffalo both saw their win streaks end in front of home crowds, while Jacksonville proved it shouldn’t be underestimated in taking down Kansas City on Monday night to improve to 4-1. Tennessee took advantage of Arizona’s touchdown-turned-touchback error and notched its first victory of the season on a last-second field goal. And the Ravens, previously touted as a strong contender to win this year’s Stupor Bore, watched their record sink to 1-4 as they were routed by the visiting Texans, 44-10, while an injured Lamar Alexander watched from the the bench.

About the only one feeling good about this bye-shortened week was Ben, whose 8-6 record saw him extend his lead in the overall standings by three games. Glenn and Sean limped to identical 5-9 marks for second place. We collectively only predicted four winners: Minnesota, Dallas, Indianapolis and Detroit. Our mutual misses included San Francisco, Denver, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, New England and Jacksonville.
