Consider the script officially flipped. From leading the race for this year’s Surfy Trophy by two games coming into Week 17, the Senior Bro suddenly finds himself playing from behind at the end of it. What looked like it might be the end of a seven-year championship drought is now Sean’s to lose with just 16 games left in the season.
Christmas week breeds chaos, and there was plenty to go around as 10 teams won on the road, leading to upsets and upset stomachs for those trying to predict outcomes. Sean’s big week began on Saturday, when the Texans traveled to L.A. in desperate need of a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Chargers, who had already secured a postseason berth, quickly found themselves in a 14-0 hole they never recovered from, and Houston’s defense did the rest in limiting the Chargers’ offensive production to just 16 points while intercepting Justin Herbert at the goal line and watching kicker Cameron Dicker miss a field goal and an extra point as the Texans won 20-16 to give Sean a leg up entering Sunday’s slate of games.
Despite a number of intriguing matchups on the menu, the Bros split arguably the two least enticing games of the weekend. In the first, the Junior Bro took “red hot” New Orleans at Tennessee while Glenn thought he saw something in the Titans. His logic appeared sound for the first half, as the Titans opened with a 13-0 advantage and went to the locker room 20-10 after a walk-off touchdown. But the Saints were relentless behind rookie QB Tyler Shough, who in the fourth quarter struck for multiple deep passes and a touchdown throw that sealed the comeback victory, 34-26.
That left the afternoon contest between the Giants and Raiders — dubbed the “Toilet Bowl” because of their identical 2-13 records — to decide whether Glenn would cling to a lead headed to Week 18 or if Sean would take the weekend sweep. It was never really in doubt. The Raiders looked every bit of their now 10-game losing streak as they failed to do much on offense until a 65-yard touchdown late in the third quarter pulled them briefly to within 10 points. On the ensuing kickoff, Giants return man Deonte Banks reeled off a 95-yard run for a touchdown that removed any doubt the Giants would end their own 7-game losing skid. New York won a 34-10 rout.
The 3-game sweep for the Junior Bro — the first of its kind this season and all behind road teams — catapulted him into the lead for the Surfy and second place in the overall standings, still 8 games behind Ben who is well on his way to his first title in 15 years. Sean won the week at 10-6, Ben was second at 9-7, and Glenn finished third at 7-9 — finding the absolute worst time to have a dud week. There were remarkably few games we all got right, including Dallas and Denver (part of the “3 D’s of Christmas” slate), Cincinnati, New England, Jacksonville, Seattle and San Francisco. Winners who evaded us included Minnesota, Baltimore, Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
