Christmas came early across the NawFuL nation this week for several teams that unwrapped shiny new gifts in the form of playoff berths and division titles. But while Santa may have been handing out presents to the likes of Chicago, Seattle, Jacksonville, New England, San Francisco and a few others, he appears in no hurry to visit the Gehlke Bros, who remain in close contention. But he did have some lumps of coal to distribute.
One of those crusty little nuggets went to Tampa Bay. With the division lead up for grabs, the Buccaneers were driving late in the fourth quarter, down a field goal to Carolina, with an opportunity to tie the game or possibly win it with a classic Baker Mayfield comeback. Instead, Baker did something else classic — he tossed a game-ending INT that had been intended for WR Mike Evans, and the Panthers prevailed 23-20. It may have been a Christmas gift in disguise for the Junior Bro.
Sean needed that win to keep pace with Glenn in the battle for the Surfy Trophy, which appears set to go down to the wire. That’s because while the Panthers were holding off the Bucs, another team from Florida — Miami — was having even less luck against visiting Cincinnati in the only other split for Week 16. Already eliminated from postseason contention, the Dolphins got busy on 2026 by handing the ball to rookie QB Quinn Ewers. The Bengals, likely still stewing from being shut out at home a week ago, took out their frustrations on Miami behind Joe Burrow’s four touchdowns and 309 total yards through the air. The 45-21 rout keeps Glenn ahead by 2 games with two weeks to go.
It was a week of shocking endings that couldn’t have been better scripted by a Hollywood director. On Thursday, the Rams went up by 16 points early in the fourth quarter and appeared on their way to victory before Seattle scored a quick pair of touchdowns with 2-point conversions and the Rams missed a crucial field goal that opened the door to an improbable 38-37 Seahawks victory in OT — fittingly by going for 2 after the last TD instead of just taking the game-tying PAT. On Saturday, Chicago worked the magic at home against Green Bay, overcoming a late 10-point deficit to send the game to OT and win it 22-16 on a Caleb Williams 46-yarder to DJ Moore. And on Sunday afternoon, the Steelers survived a thrilling goal line stand against the Lions. After appearing to stop Detroit’s Amon-Ra St. Brown on fourth down, St. Brown flicked the ball back to QB Jared Goff, who ran in for what would have been the game-winner. But the refs ruled it pass interference by the offense and the game was over, Pittsburg winning 29-24.
For the second straight week, all our professional amateur prognosticators shared identical records, each going 11-5. Correct calls included Philadelphia, Chicago, New Orleans, Buffalo, Minnesota, L.A. Chargers, Atlanta, Houston and San Francisco. We were all wrong about winners Seattle, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh.
