It was described as one of the worst games of Aaron Rodgers’ career. A stinker for the ages by the future Hall of Fame quarterback that left the Pittsburgh Steelers just a game up on their division, and reduced the Senior Bro’s lead in the Surfy standings to a similar margin on Sunday night.
The Steelers were in town to face the L.A. Chargers in the week’s lone split game. That would be the same Chargers squad that earlier this season toppled its arch nemesis Kansas City in the Week 1 kickoff down in Brazil… and then inexplicably fell to the woeful Giants and Commanders in Weeks 4 and 5, and narrowly escaped with a win at Miami in Week 6. Which team would show up for this one was anyone’s guess, and it looked like Pittsburgh might finally be coming around on defense after acquiring some key personnel before the league’s trade deadline — bad news for an L.A. offensive line missing one of its stars in tackle Joe Alt. Justin Herbert might be in for a long night against a Steelers D that forced six turnovers the previous week against conference-leading Indianapolis. He might have been, except it didn’t happen. The Chargers got their run game going early and capitalized on numerous missed opportunities by their opponent to rip the Steelers by a final of 25-10. It was a game that was even more lopsided than the final score appeared.
“I got to play better than this,” Rodgers opined in a postgame news conference after going 16 of 31 for 161 yards with one touchdown and a pair of interceptions. Coach Mike Tomlin put it another way: “We stunk it up tonight.” He’ll get no argument from Glenn, who has now been choked by the Terrible Towel in three straight games, two of them costly defeats on Sunday night. It has been a rough four weeks for the Senior Bro, whose once four-game advantage has dwindled to a single digit with eight weeks to play.
The bye weeks tend to be a volatile time of the season, but Sean has been taking them in stride. He won Week 10 with a 10-4 record to inch within 6 games of the overall lead of his nephew, Ben. King Chaos has been anything but so far, turning in another consistent performance at 9-5 to tie his dad for second. We all correctly picked Denver on Thursday and Indianapolis in the Berlin game on Sunday morning before the going got rough, but still we found success with Chicago, Baltimore, Seattle, the L.A. Rams, Detroit and Philadelphia. Nobody predicted the wins of Miami, New England, the N.Y. Jets or New Orleans.
