The Junior Bro has gotten used to being seven games down in the Surfy standings over the past three seasons, but seven to the good is unfamiliar territory, and it comes on the strength of his third straight week of multi-game pickups. So as Sean celebrates his 42nd birthday on Tuesday, perhaps he will also want to hoist a can of 7-Up in acknowledgment of a position he has not been in since the final week of the 2012 season — the last one in which he won the championship.
It has been a brutal season so far for the Senior Bro, who seems to be making up for a four-year run of good luck. His meager highlight reel added one big win on Sunday, however, when the visiting Steelers handed the Chiefs their first defeat of 2017, 19-13. Pittsburgh was one of eight road teams that were victorious in Week 6, continuing a recent trend of home field flops; 26 of the past 44 games have gone to the visitors.
But it was Sean who won the majority of the four brotherly splits, taking the Saints’ 52-38 demolition of the Lions in the morning games, a 27-17 road win by the Rams over the Jaguars on Sunday afternoon, and the pivotal Monday nighter when the host Titans ended a streak of 11 losses to their division rival Colts, 36-22.
Sean added two games to his advantage. In the 20 seasons that Gehlke Bros. Football has been online and now more than a third of the way home for 2017, it is the earliest point in any year Sean has held this large a lead.
In a bye-shortened week when upsets made mediocrity good enough to prevail, Sean led the pack at 7-7. Ben called the Chicago, Minnesota and Pittsburgh wins, but that only helped bring him to 6-8 and second place. Glenn struggled to his third consecutive sub-.500 week, managing just 5-9 for third place. Our mutually correct picks included Houston, Washington and Arizona. None of us foresaw the victories of road winners Philadelphia, Miami, the L.A. Chargers or the New York Giants.
