Is Week 1 too early for a bye? Not if your team plays in the state of Florida and there is a category 5 hurricane bearing down on you, which was the case in Miami where the Dolphins were supposed to host the Buccaneers on Sunday before Irma came to call. Instead, the game was postponed until Week 11, and we were faced with a short schedule for the season kickoff.
It had all the feel of a bye week, too, starting with a huge upset on opening night when the defending Stupor Bore champion Patriots were thrashed at home by the visiting Chiefs. And with the Bros attending memorial services for their late grandparents, there was little time spent at home in front of the tube catching football games. But home apparently wasn’t the best place to be Sunday, as it was a pair of visitors who gave Sean an early leg up in the 2017 GBF season standings.
Baltimore went in to Cincinnati and won there for the first time since 2011, a convincing 20-0 shutout of their division rivals. At the same time, Philadelphia was taking it to Washington, 30-17, in the nation’s capital. Those were only two of the eight games won by road teams, putting a damper on many a homecoming in addition to that wrought by forces of nature.
Sean, who hopes to shake off a four-year Surfy slump, opens the season by winning the week with a 12-3 record. Glenn was second with a 10-5 mark, while Ben claimed third by going 8-7. We all picked Pittsburgh, Oakland, Carolina, Minnesota and Denver, but no one predicted the win by Kansas City.
