The Gehlke Bros. Football season still has a week remaining, but as for the Surfy Trophy, that's been decided. For the third time in as many years, the Senior Bro will get to hoist the golden statuette high in victory after mathematically clinching the championship in a Week 16 rout. It is the first time since GBF took to the Internet in 1998 that Glenn has won back-to-back-to-back titles, and it is the second straight year that he has locked things up before the final week of the season.
Yes, Glenn guaranteed his latest title by gaining 12 games over the past two weeks, but it should be noted that Sean all but conceded defeat after Week 14 and has since resorted to somewhat less conventional methods of making his picks. After random coin tosses resulted in a spectacular 7-game meltdown last week, he resorted to technology to give him what he hoped would be the winning edge in Week 16 — he asked Siri. Yes, Siri, the human-sounding software shipped with every Apple iPhone. Not only can she tell you "what does the fox say," but she can also generate random numbers that may — or may not — hold the key to football prognosticating greatness.
After losing the Christmas Eve split when the Raiders beat the Chargers in overtime, 23-20, and then the Saturday night game, Sean cashed in his coin and turned to the phone in search of a Siri-ous comeback. Here's how the additional 10 splits that resulted went down:
* Chicago beat Tampa Bay, 26-21 — score one for Siri.
* Falcons hand Panthers their first loss of the year, 20-13 — Siri wins again. (Maybe she should get two points for calling that one correctly.)
* Colts dump Dolphins, 18-12, to stay alive in AFC South race — Glenn wins that one.
* Bills knock off Cowboys, 16-6 — Glenn wins.
* Jets upset Patriots, 26-20, in crucial game with playoff implications — Glenn wins again.
The morning's split schedule concluded with the 49ers at the Lions, and it proved to be the decisive game that locked up the Surfy for the Senior Bro. When the Lions won, 32-17, Glenn broke into his happy dance, or whatever passes for a Three-peat victory celebration. But there were still four split games remaining...
* Saints beat Jags, 38-27 — Glenn is guaranteed a winning week.
* Rams defeat Seahawks, 23-17, to sweep a division series — Siri's final successful split.
* Vikings throttle Giants on Sunday night, 49-17 — Gravy for the Senior Bro.
* Broncos improve playoff standing with 20-17 OT victory against the Bengals in the final Monday night game of the year — A 5-game swing for the Senior Bro.
That's two straight 11-split weeks during which Sean has gone 5-17, so if there is anything to prove from this experiment it seems likely to be that coin flips and tech toys are a pretty poor substitute for the brainpower of even the most unlucky human handicapper. But maybe the Junior Bro will get the bugs worked out by next season.
Glenn may have won the Surfy with his 11-5 mark in Week 16, but it was Ben defeating everyone by going 12-4 to regain second place in the overall standings, now just 19 games back. Sean — or was it Siri? — finished 6-10 for third place. Amid all the disagreement we still managed to pick two teams correctly across the board: Kansas City and Arizona. There were no games that we all got wrong.
