Is the fat lady singing? She is if you ask the Junior Bro, who was burned not once but twice in three days by the NawFuL's penchant for buzzer-beaters. Coming off last Monday's "kick-six" loss in Cleveland, Sean saw another certain win go south Thursday when a penalty on what should have been the game's final play gave Green Bay one last chance for a Hail Mary pass that beat Detroit, 27-23. It was an improbable start to Week 13 that also marked the first time since Week 9 that Glenn had correctly picked a Thursday night game, and the first time since Week 2 that he had gone to Sunday with an advantage in the weekly splits.
Whether it was an indicator that this week's matchups were simply too close to call or that things are getting desperate with the season winding down, the Bros managed seven more splits on Sunday to go with the one on Thursday, matching a weekly high of eight established in the opening week of the season. For Sean, who has made no inroads into the Senior Bro's lead since Week 10, he wasn't optimistic the trend would change. "It won't make any difference," he said. "I'll win three or four and we'll still be the same. You'll see."
Indeed, with six games up for grabs in the morning session, Sean's prediction came true. There was one bonafide rout, which Glenn won when Seattle defeated Minnesota, 38-7. Glenn also got help from Arizona's 27-3 win at St. Louis, but he still needed one more to guarantee at least a wash for the week. The other four games were much closer, and all were won by the home teams. Sean had some luck on his side, too, when Tampa Bay came from behind to beat visiting Atlanta, 23-19; Miami edged Baltimore, 15-13; and Buffalo broke a tie late in the game to take a 30-21 win at home against Houston.
The last of the morning contests that could have gone either way was Jacksonville at Tennessee, a rematch of the Week 11 Thursday night split that Sean won. The Bros went with the same picks, but this time the result favored the Senior Bro as Tennessee pulled out a 42-39 victory for its first home win in 12 tries.
The final split of the weekend was the Sunday afternoon contest between AFC West rivals Kansas City and Oakland. We all have a team we hate, and Oakland is Sean's; he had missed the last six picks involving the Raiders, four of those costing him splits. But in fitting fashion, with his bold prediction of a wash week on the line, Sean finally broke into the Raiders win column when the Chiefs pulled off a 34-20 victory.
And just as happened in Week 2 when Glenn last started Sunday with the Thursday game advantage, we all went 8-8. No ground gained, none lost. Glenn still leads the Surfy standings by 10 games, but now there are just four weeks left to play. Eleven teams won on the road, contributing to some upsets. We all picked just three teams correctly: Cincinnati, Denver and Pittsburgh. Our four total misses all involved road teams: San Francisco (first road win of the year), the New York Jets (winning the Battle of New York), Philadelphia (handing the Pats their second straight defeat), and Dallas (in a crazy division rivalry game that was boring until the final 2 minutes.)
