The Gehlke Bros. got right down to business in Week 1, notching eight splits to open a season for the first time ever. It was the most opening week splits since 2011, and the largest number of splits in any weekend since the infamous "quarter-toss" predictions that resulted in 12 splits the final day of the 2010 season. But no matter how you choose to look at it, it was a terrific way to begin the season for the Senior Bro, who finds himself 4 games up in his quest for a third straight Surfy Trophy.

It was total consensus for the Thursday night opener that saw the Patriots defeat the visiting Steelers. But that harmonious atmosphere quickly faded by Sunday morning, which saw the Bros split more than half the remaining schedule.

There were splits on the TV all Sunday, starting with the morning games that saw Kansas City dominate at Houston, 27-20, and the Jets come from behind to topple Cleveland, 31-10. It took overtime for the Rams to defeat the visiting Seahawks in a thrilling seesaw contest that kept Sean in the hunt early. But things took a decidedly NawFuL turn in the afternoon, when the Bengals won for the first time ever in Oakland, handing the Raiders a 33-13 beatdown, and Denver managed to survive visiting Baltimore, 19-13, in a game that saw the Broncos go without an offensive touchdown.

That brought us to Sunday night, with the Junior Bro in desperate need of a win. The Giants obliged, giving away a game at Dallas they had all but won, when Eli Manning threw an incomplete pass on third down that stopped the clock, allowing Tony Romo to march the Cowboys downfield for the game-winning touchdown as time expired.

Monday night has long been the Senior Bro's Achilles' heel, so it seemed Sean would have a good chance to break even with two split games on the Monday schedule. But the Falcons and 49ers had other ideas. The former held on at home to beat the Eagles, 26-24, while the latter donned hideous black-and-red uniforms to punish the visiting Vikings, 20-3. It was perhaps for the best that Sean was camping in the Sierra and safely out of range of cellular and TV reception.

Glenn came out swinging in Week 1, going 12-4. Sean and Ben tied for second at 8-8. We all correctly picked winners New England, Arizona and San Diego. Nobody predicted wins by Buffalo or Tennessee.
