A few tricks but not too many treats in Week 8
Halloween isn't until Wednesday, but there were some pretty frightful games on the Week 8 schedule, with more tricks than treats for would-be prognosticators. Visiting teams ruled the day at many a haunted house throughout NawFuLdom.
And fitting the theme of the week in which an unlucky 13 games were played the Gehlke Bros chose a couple of the most ghastly matchups over which to disagree. But it was Glenn who ended Sunday with the haunting feeling that comes only with falling behind in the standings as midseason nears. Sean was able to scare up some good luck with penalty-prone Cleveland's 27-20 victory over winless St. Louis. Later, it was Buffalo triumphing in the battle of New York (or is that northern New Jersey?) as they dumped the hapless Jets at the Meadowlands, 13-3. For the Junior Bro, his sudden 2-game lead in the standings must feel like the morning after going through a whole sack of candy on Halloween night: a sickening-yet-satisfied fullness. Sean was scary-good in Week 8, going 10-3 for the best record. Glenn went 8-5, while Ben was 7-6. We all were enchanted by the success of Indianapolis, Tennessee, San Diego, New Orleans and New England. We felt cursed by the likes of Chicago and Tampa Bay. ...And winless Miami probably felt doubly cursed by having to play in foggy, rainy, muddy London as they lost to the New York Giants 13-10. |
